August, 1943 – Optimism on all Allied fronts

A string of military victories in the Pacific and in Italy, and the beginning of the Allied air offensive over key German cities were reasons for optimism in August of 1943.  Italy surrendered unconditionally on Sept. 8. It was considered the greatest victory for Allied arms since the beginning of the war.
